The Treelife of Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve, nestled in the North West Province of South Africa, is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and rich biodiversity. While the reserve is often celebrated for its abundant wildlife, its treelife is equally captivating. There are over 100 tree specials in Madikwe, the rich diversity of the vegetation a reflection of its complex geomorphology.

Among the diverse flora, we’d like to highlight just four trees that stand out for their ecological importance and cultural significance: the Marula, Sweet Thorn, Tamboti, and Sycamore Fig. In this blog post, we’ll delve into the unique characteristics and roles of these remarkable trees in the Madikwe ecosystem.

The Marula tree is one of the most iconic species in southern Africa, and a favourite chillout spot for leopards. With its distinctive, spreading crown and rough, mottled bark, it can be easily identified. The tree produces small, yellow-green fruits that are rich in Vitamin C and have a tart, juicy taste. The fruit is famously used to make the “Amarula” cream liqueur, which we personally love to add to coffee after a morning game drive. The kernels are rich in oil, which is then used in cooking and cosmetics and the bark, leaves, and roots have been traditionally used in African medicine to treat various ailments.

Marula trees play a vital role in the ecosystem, providing food and habitat for a variety of animals. Elephants, in particular, are known to be fond of Marula fruits and can often be seen feeding on them during the fruiting season. Other animals, such as baboons and warthogs, also enjoy the nutritious fruits.

The Sweet Thorn, also known as the Karroo Thorn, is a small to medium-sized tree characterized by its bright yellow, pom-pom-like flowers and long, white thorns. The tree is deciduous, shedding its leaves in the dry season. Sweet Thorn trees are crucial for soil stabilization and erosion control, thanks to their extensive root systems. They also fix nitrogen in the soil, improving fertility and promoting the growth of other plants.

The flowers are a rich source of nectar for bees, making the tree important for honey production. In traditional practices, the gum exuded by the Sweet Thorn is used as a remedy for coughs and colds.

Found doted around our lodge, and a favourite landmark for drink stops during game drives, Tamboti trees are medium-sized with a straight trunk and dark, fissured bark. The leaves are glossy and turn a striking red in autumn, adding a splash of color to the landscape. The tree produces small, three-lobed fruits that contain a toxic latex. Its leaves and bark provide food for various herbivores, while the tree itself offers shelter for birds and insects. In traditional medicine, Tamboti wood is used cautiously for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties.

A tree around which one of our Luxury Suite decks are built, the Sycamore Fig is a large, spreading tree with a dense, rounded crown and smooth, pale bark. It produces small, fig-like fruits that turn yellow or red when ripe. The tree is evergreen, providing year-round greenery in the reserve.

Sycamore Fig trees are keystone species in many African ecosystems. They provide a critical food source for a wide range of animals, including birds, bats and monkeys. The tree’s extensive root system helps prevent soil erosion and stabilizes riverbanks. Culturally, the Sycamore Fig holds a place of reverence in many African traditions. It is often considered a sacred tree, symbolizing life and fertility.
